Due to lack of corporate teams we have had to postpone the start of our corporate competition and open the competition up to a wider audience. Teams no longer have to come from the same work place or any work place at all! This new competition is aimed at social players.

The competition now starts on Tuesday 17 March and runs for 7 weeks. Start times will be 4:00 and 5:30pm.
2 player teams will contest each round with 2 singles and 1 doubles per player. Each match will be best of 5 games to 11.
The cost is $70 per team ($5 per week per person) and must be paid before the competition starts.

Time Capsule Updated 24/5/08
A time capsule is a historic cache of goods and/or information, usually intended as a method of communication with people in the future (from Wikipedia, the free encyclopaedia).
The club is organising a Time Capsule to commemorate the club’s 75th Jubille in 2009.
There are a number of ways you can participate in this venture:
  • Contribute your Empire Table Tennis Club memorabilia for inclusion in the time capsule
  • Purchase a piece of time capsule letter head to write a personal message to your family/friends (one photo can be included)
  • Write a message in the guest book

Contributions need to be handed in to the club by 7 March for burial at the opening of the new playing area (date yet to be decided but hopefully early in 2008).
The time capsule will be unearthed at our 100th Jubilee celebrations in 2034.
Time capsule letterhead $10
Guest book entry $5

Hanna Squire has been visiting the club regularly to assist, especially, our girl members. Thank you, Hanna, for making yourself available.

History

Club Founding Statement

In 1930 a number of enthusiastic young Petone and Lower Hutt teenagers (average age 16) formed a cricket club and needed to decide on a name to affiliate to the Hutt Valley Cricket Association. At the time their cricket gear was carried in an oversize sugarbag (a common description in those days for all types of sacks of medium size.) Included in the wording on the sack was the word "Empire" so that became the name of the cricket club. The members were keen to stay together during the winter months so table tennis became part of the cricket club’s activities. The table tennis section had been in operation for two years when the members learned of a meeting to form a Hutt Valley Table Tennis sub-Association of the Wellington Table Tennis Association (which had been formed in 1933.) The meeting was held in Skinners Garage in High Street, Lower Hutt on 1 May 1934.At the meeting of the new Hutt Valley Table Tennis sub-Association held on 10 July 1934, an application for affiliation from the Empire Table Tennis Club was received and accepted. It was in that year that the Empire Table Tennis Club became a completely separate entity from the cricket club.
The founder of the Empire Table Tennis Club was Mr Alfred Ransom Harding. He maintained a very active interest in the Club until ill health forced his retirement in 1997. He died on 1 January 2000 at the age of 86.
